Do You Know the Properties of Sapphire Windows?

1. The properties of the sapphire window


Sapphire (molecular formula Al2O3) single crystal is an excellent multifunctional material. It has high temperature resistance, good thermal conductivity, high hardness, infrared transmission and good chemical stability. At the same time, it is also a widely used single crystal substrate material. It is the choice of substrate for the current blue, violet, and white light emitting diode (LED) and blue laser (LD) industries.


Sapphire window properties: The sapphire window is a double-plane optical sapphire glass, usually used as a protective window for sensors and detectors. The window does not change the magnification of the system. It is widely used as an important window material for high-energy detection and high-power lasers.


2. Characteristics of the sapphire window


(1) It has super high surface hardness and chemical resistance.

(2) It can transmit wavelengths between UV and mid-infrared.

(3) It is thinner and stronger than standard glass windows.


Sapphire windows are very suitable for demanding applications (such as laser systems). The reason is that they have extremely high surface hardness, high thermal conductivity, high dielectric constant and resistance to chemical acids and alkalis. Since the hardness of sapphire is second only to diamond, and its structural strength is very high, the thickness of the sapphire window made by enhanced light transmittance is thinner than that of the general high-dielectric window. In terms of chemistry, sapphire is a single crystal of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), which is very suitable for transmission between 0.2 and 5.5 μm thickness.
